This stand-alone, two-day workshop provides a solid foundation in Quality Improvement, enabling participants to begin exploring QI independently and to start meeting curriculum requirements. Each session is supported by tailored learning resources and practical workplace activities to reinforce understanding and application.
The course is an ideal entry point for those wishing to progress towards undertaking a full Quality Improvement Project (QIP).
Introduction to QI is an innovative course designed for all medical professionals, medical trainees, consultants, qualified nurses, pharmacists and allied healthcare professionals.
The course is open to all regions.

Course Overview
Workshop 1 includes:
- Audit v’s PDSA
- Difference between audit, research, service evaluation and QI
- A curriculum requirement, a lifetime of skills
- 3minuteQI story from a previous learner
- Small group work
- Q&A with guest speaker (previous learner)
- Intro to QI tools used in diagnostics
- Activity based on use of ONE diagnostic tool to bring to workshop 2
- Goody pack including QI resource and refreshments
Workshop 2 includes:
- Brief recap on learning points from Workshop 1
- 3minuteQI story from trainee attending workshop (coaching provided)
- Small group work – sharing experiences
- Feedback from small group work
- Intro to the Model for Improvement
- 3minuteQI story from a previous learner
- Small group work
- Q&A with guest speaker (previous learner)
- More QI diagnostics
- Overview of Improve ONE thing: Paediatrics programme
- Goody pack including QI resource and refreshments
Our workshop schedule provides learners with protected time to work through modules, reflect on key concepts, and apply them through discussion and workplace-based activities. This approach fosters deeper learning and builds the confidence needed to put QI into practice.
Our virtual workshops connect learners from across regions in a shared learning space. This not only highlights variations in practice between Trusts and regions but also encourages peer-to-peer learning and a broader understanding of how challenges emerge across different health systems. By exchanging ideas, learners can identify whether their QI issue is unique to their hospital or a national concern—and gain the tools to adapt and adopt effective solutions.

Learn from leaders with extensive experience in leadership and management and practical aspect of effecting sustained change in clinical services.
Nicola Davey
Nicola Davey began working in improvement science some years ago when she realised the significant impact that well-designed changes could make to patients. She has worked extensively with clinicians to improve childrens’ services and together with the LSP Faculty has taught and supported over 50 doctors, nurses, pharmacists and parents on this programme to date.

Stephanie Meddick-Dyson
After completing a Biochemistry and Medical degree, Stephanie is a now an Academic Clinical Fellow Registrar in Palliative Medicine with full membership to the Royal College of Physicians.
She has a keen interest in working to improve the quality of care delivered and the job satisfaction of those around her. In her early career as a foundation doctor, Stephanie took part in one of QIClearn’s initial programmes learning about QI methodology and putting them into practice. This has set her up throughout her career to use the techniques effectively and build on that experience. After seeing the cascade of positives coming from completing the programme, including scoring highly on both portfolio and interview stations in job applications as she has progressed through her career, she is now pleased to be able to share her knowledge to facilitate the same development in others.
Stephanie is also currently undertaking an MSc in Medical Sciences by thesis.
