This is an innovative programme designed to provide training for Leaders in Healthcare and those aspiring to be.
QIClearn provides the opportunity to learn and refine your Leadership and Management skills and your approach to Leading by working with others over 8 weeks.
Have you completed our Improve ONE thing: The FULL QIP or have evidence of completion of a FULL QIP? If so, this course is available to book, to build on your Quality Improvement Project experience.
Over an 8 week period we will strengthen your insights and understanding of Clinical Leadership and Management and give you specific tools and techniques that will enhance your impact. Learn how to use Quality Improvement methods to implement impactful change.
All modules are accessible via your mobile, laptop or tablet. Every insight is supported by our engaging resources and associated activities. The NHS Healthcare Leadership Behaviours self-assessment tool will help you reflect on where you are now and the 360 feedback activity will help you explore and develop your strengths even more. Reflective activities will help you consolidate learning and support your progress as you prepare to take on more senior roles.
Discuss and explore leadership with peers and share where your QI Change ideas are in the hierarchy of effectiveness. Gain knowledge of tools and techniques to increase your leadership impact.
Leading Healthcare, Leading Improvement enhances your competencies in Clinical Leadership and Management, with a focus on managing change for yourself and others.
- Domain 6 Leadership e.g. Demonstrates an awareness of own leadership qualities, adjusting their approach to improve outcomes; Leads in multi-disciplinary team working. Promotes an open culture of learning and accountability by challenging and influencing colleague’s behaviour
- Domain 8 Quality Improvement e.g. Independently applies knowledge of quality improvement processes to undertake projects and audits to improve clinical effectiveness, patient safety and patient experience; Identifies quality improvement opportunities; Leads and facilitates reflective evaluation in relation to quality improvement interventions
You will learn about the structure of the NHS, Patient safety, the difference between leading and managing and about your personal development as a leader.
You will have the opportunity to collaborate using an innovative platform affording access to a wide range of expertise. You will also be encouraged to consider how you might support others as you continue to develop your leadership skills after the course has ended.
Through PRACTICAL activity you will reflect on your experience of leading and managing small changes, how you used a structured robust approach to change informed throughout by measurement for improvement, and how you might take others with you on this journey in the future.
Completion will include a certificate and 15 hours CPD accreditation.
This is a course open to all geographies and Trusts. Medical and surgical doctors and consultants, and anyone in a current Leadership or with future aspiration. It is imperative that all learners undertake the Quality Improvement Project before embarking on the Leadership and Management course.

Meet your instructors
Learn from leaders with extensive experience in leadership and management and practical aspect of effecting sustained change in clinical services.

Heather Shearer
Heather has a portfolio of work that supports health and care people to improve their working lives and the services which they provide.
She works with the University of St Andrews Medical School to bring Agents for Change (including Quality Improvement) curriculum to undergraduate medical education. With QIC she supports postgraduate trainees who are learning about quality improvement approaches. As well as these QI roles she is an Executive Coach and has clients from a wide range of professional backgrounds and levels of seniority.
Her previous roles have in the NHS in England and Scotland have been at local, regional and national levels; and in both provider and commissioner organisations. She has supported board members to enhance their quality improvement skills and confidence in leading and governing organizations.
She holds a PhD in Psychology (2001) and a variety of quality improvement, coaching and educational qualifications.

Dionne Matthews
Dionne specializes in working across complex systems and learning through doing. She obtained her PhD in Cardiovascular health in November 2013 and holds an MSc in Sport and Exercise Science, along with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Kinesiology. Dionne has conducted research within several populations and has contributed to publications in cardiovascular health, sport science and quality improvement. Dionne has worked on quality improvement implementation within the NHS since 2015 across several NHS Trusts and also has a passion for value based healthcare.
Dionne obtained an NIHR CLAHRC NWL fellowship, which introduced her to the world of improvement science. She went on to work at NIHR CLAHRC NWL and conducted research under the umbrella of the breathlessness theme, engaging clinicians and patients in a discussion around best practice for management of chronic conditions such as heart failure and COPD.
Dionne is currently responsible for expanding the use of real-world evidence in a new hospital network called ARWEN. Through building strong relationships with healthcare providers and key opinion leaders, she is focusing on scientific exchange through interactions with physicians, scientific organizations and internal stakeholders. She drives collaborations by supporting outbound and inbound digital marketing campaigns and working with healthcare professionals to improve the use of RWE and tackle healthcare inequalities.

Nicola Davey
Nicola is a director and founder of the Quality Improvement Clinic (QIC) of which QIClearn is a subsidiary enterprise.
She leads the design and delivery of QIClearn programmes and excels in working with healthcare organisations to develop better patient services. In the past 3 years she has been overseen the development and use of innovative online digital learning and has integrated this into all QIClearn programmes.
She has designed, developed and delivered programmes to 1000’s of learners and has coached 100’s to complete Quality Improvement Projects in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical settings. Nicola is passionate about developing others and has helped many people develop themselves in order to teach others.
Nicola is a well-known and highly experienced quality improvement practitioner. This expertise and her passion for better services is translated into high-quality content for QIClearn participants.
A pharmacist by background she has over 30 years of experience in the healthcare sector. She has a post-graduate certificate in Advanced Improvement for Quality and Safety, is a trustee of the Clinical Human Factors Group and is a member of the Health Foundations College of Assessors and Q community.
